These tiny, light, and durable espresso makers use a clever built-in pumping system to reach the high pressures needed for a proper espresso. Ever since its release, the Aeropress made waves as the little coffee maker that could. Some even touted its ability to brew espresso from home. While it is capable of brewing a dense concentrate that has some espresso-like properties, the result doesn’t stand up when compared to real espresso. Fellow Products, the company behind the Stagg Dripper and Kettle, set out to fix that with their Aeropress attachment named Prismo. It claims to give the Aeropress superpowers, but does it stand up to espresso pulled from a machine? Defining Terms However, I have discovered 2 secret methods that deliver a delicous crema every time. It’s early days for me though, so plenty of time to refine my skills. Inverted AeroPress Method Tasting Notes: This brew has a similar aroma to the first sample, but a bit smokier. It also had hints of sweet fruit or chocolate. The tasting notes were noticeably fruity, much more bitter, and more full-bodied. Unlike the first sample—which was mellow—this cup was rather strong. The painful problem is in the way the AeroPress works. The delicious crema floats at the top. Then, at the end of your press, the ground coffee beans absorb the crema.In my experience, I’ve gotten more “crema” by using a paper filter with the Prismo (including the metal filter), likely because of the extra force (pressure) required to push the water through. However, these are more likely just bubbles and not a true crema. Prismo likely won’t produce the crema you’re envisioning, and surely not what a true espresso machine can. This is because there isn’t nearly enough pressure being generated to do so. If there was, you probably wouldn’t even be able to push the plunger down (not without making a gigantic mess, anyhow). In pushing the plunger down, I immediately noticed the pressure actuated valve didn’t require as much force as I had expected. In fact, it was quite effortless to push down—different from what I had been reading about up to this point.

Cleaning the Fellow Prismo attachment is more complex than cleaning the AeroPress alone, but I don’t think this should dissuade you from buying it. It’s an inevitable consequence of using a reusable filter rather than disposable paper. You can’t just toss the filter in the trash; from an environmental standpoint, that’s a good thing.Combined with a “no drip seal”, you can brew a full immersion coffee without inverting your AeroPress. When I think of espresso coffee, I think of something that’s bold, punchy, and delicious—especially when turned into my favorite coffee beverage, the café mocha. So now that we can get crema with an AeroPress, we need to inspect the “how”. There’s some unique opinions about how it’s best done. Place a paper filter on top of the tamped coffee grounds. Make sure the filter is flat and covering the grounds.
