About this deal

Morpurgo added: “Storymakers and storytellers like Barrie, and like all the previous winners of this award, have given us the hope and faith children need, we need, to keep flying, have sustained us through dark and troubled times, have banished doubt. To touch the lives of children, to witness their listening and reading silence, is reward enough in itself. This is simply the icing on the cake.” A son and grandson of actors, Michael has acting in his blood and enjoys collaborating and performing live adaptations of his books at festivals, concerts and theatres.

Daniel Pender—Daniel is a handy boy, but he is also adventurous and social. But Daniel is also afraid of the dark.

To follow Gracie and Daniel through their adventures is interesting. Daniel is brave and outgoing, whereas Gracie is shy and hidden away. This doesn't stop her from facing her fears and following her best friend, though. I didn't fully remember the story, just the basic outline. I'm not eight anymore, so although I could remember the parts that I had found very moving when I was small, they don't quite do it for me anymore. This probably has more to do with me being jaded than being a flaw in the book. In November 2016 Michael Morpurgo won the J M Barrie Award for his contribution to children’s literature. This award is given every year by Action for Children’s Arts to a “children’s arts practitioner” whose lifetime’s work has delighted children and will stand the test of time. Came"– news · newspapers · books · scholar · JSTOR ( November 2015) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message) I really enjoyed this book as it had a very interesting plot that took a lot of twists and turns along the way. The plot consisted of lots of different sub stories that kept the book interesting. I also liked how the book was set during the war as it showed how bad the war was and because in class we had been learning about World War One and now I knew a little about World War Two. The book showed that if you believe in something enough your belief will come true because only four people didn't want the whales to die and the same four people managed to save the whales. Clemmie Jenkins—The mother of Gracie who possesses a calm but "weird" personality. Not so much an actor in the story, but she is really fearful.
